The very idea of an electronic keyboard was once almost laughable to people who were even a little bit interested in performing music. It seemed cheap and unconvincing, and the movement of the keys was simply nowhere near that of the genuine, acoustic instrument. While the tone made by the device may not be very relevant to the musician’s capability to learn, practice, and perform, the improperly analogous key action can be quite challenging if the skills are to be transferred to a full sized instrument anytime in the future.

Way back in those days, electronic keyboards were nothing more than toys. The keys were a lot more like buttons that, when pressed, would deliver a tone despite of note velocity. The erstwhile musician would be limited to one note melody with absolutely no expression or phrasing possible at all because many of the keys were not able create polyphonic sound. It didn’t take very long for this paradigm to change, however. Soon there were all types of very good quality electronic keyboards available from many manufacturers. Companies like Kurzweil, Yamaha, and Steinway started to vigorously market their own lines of electronics even though they are all famous for crafting full sized acoustic pianos with tremendous skill and focus on detail.

These new boards had the thing that everybody was anticipating. They had built in natural, precise key response. The keys had the appropriate weight to them, they fell and rose the way that a performer desired, and they just basically felt and was more natural to play. They were still eminently portable and small on top of that. It was fairly possible to set it in a corner of a bedroom or anywhere convenient before they are needed and wouldn’t consume an entire living room or family area.
